BTO- Chairman of Binh Thuan provincial People’s Committee Le Tien Phuong has just ratified the province’s urbanization program period 2012-2020 and orientation towards 2030.
Up to 2015, the whole province is expected to have 15 urban areas, including 1 second-tier city (Phan Thiet City), 1 third-tier city (La Gi Town), 1 fourth-tier city (Phan Ri Town), and 12 fifth-tier urban areas (namely the townlets of Lien Huong, Cho Lau, Luong Son, Ma Lam, Phu Long, Thuan Nam, Tan Nghia, Tan Minh, Lac Tanh, Vo Xu and Duc Tai, along with the district capital of Phu Quy island).
In respect of the urbanization planning towards 2020, Binh Thuan will have 17 urban areas. Of these, 1 second-tier city (Phan Thiet City), 1 third-tier city (La Gi Town), 2 fourth-tier cities (Phan Ri Town and Lien Huong Town), and 13 fifth-tier urban areas (townlets of Vinh Tan, Cho Lau, Hai Ninh, Luong Son, Ma Lam, Thuan Nam, Tan Nghia, Tan Minh, Son My, Lac Tanh, Vo Xu and Duc Tai, as well as the district capital of Phu Quy island).
According to the approved planning, Phan Thiet City is projected to be the Southern urban center of the South central coastal region. It will be the core urban center, as well as the political, economic, cultural, social, scientific and technical center of Binh Thuan province. Also, Phan Thiet, which is being built to become a travel hub, then a national and international service center, is planned to be the heart for trade, industry and marine product exploitation & processing of the province.
The urbanization program also indicates that, the total municipal population is estimated at 300,000 people (including 280,000 people living in inner urban areas) in 2015 and 345,000 people (including about 315,000 inner urban residents) in 2020.
The provincial authorities should intensify the investment in building residential areas and urban infrastructures to grow the land area for construction in urban areas to 5,300 ha in 2015 and 6,300 ha in 2010 with a population density of over 5,000 people/km2.
