(VEN) – Improved communications to raise occupational health and safety (OHS) awareness for business people and workers is one of Quang Ninh Province’s recent priorities.
There are many heavy industries operating in Quang Ninh such as coal mining and construction materials production, meaning there is a high risk of occupational accidents and diseases. In response, Quang Ninh Province People’s Committee has promoted OHS awareness for local businesses and workers via the media, posters, mobile communications, flyers, pictures, and OHS contests, and continues to attempt to minimize OHS related risks.
Quang Ninh Province’s Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has organized and deployed OHS training programs for workers in the fields that require strict OHS requirements, employers, and OHS workers; supported building OHS management system for small and medium enterprises, construction companies, travel companies; and offered OHS training courses for civil servants and industrial park managers.
In addition, the Steering Committee of the National Week on OHS and Fire Prevention has also regularly monitored agencies and units on OHS implementation and applied severe sanctions when it has discovered violations and pointed out OHS limitations to business owners and employees.
Thanks to the close multi-level guidance, OHS awareness of employers and workers in Quang Ninh Province has recently been enhanced. Local businesses and workers have stayed more proactive in preventing occupational accidents and diseases and improving working conditions; and seemed more interested in consolidating their OHS management mechanism.
Although achieving encouraging OHS results, Quang Ninh Province still faces many OHS difficulties. According to the Policy Committee of Quang Ninh Labor Union, in the first five months of this year, 18 accidents occurred locally and were subject to serious investigation of occupational accidents for having killed 18 people.
To ensure OHS implementation, Quang Ninh Province’s Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs requested local businesses and production facilities to continue strengthening OHS propaganda, guide, and inspection; enhance and improve quality of OHS examination and evaluation, thereby actively implementing measures to prevent occupational accidents and diseases; continue innovating and improving the quality of safety training, occupational health, and management techniques; improve working conditions to ensure a safer working environment and healthcare services; and strictly handle violations of the labor law, especially violations leading to accidents.
It is hopeful that Quang Ninh’s OHS drastic solutions, plus increased OHS awareness among local enterprises and workers, will improve the provincial working environment in the near future./.
